As I wrote my early songs, I looked to other songs for inspiration. I noticed, however, that a lot of even the most popular songs used cliches. So what I did here was make nearly every line of the verses a cliche, or a play off of a cliche. The real meaning behind the song I'll reveal at the end.
Autumn
I wish I could be faithful
I wish I could be great
I wish that I had something meaningful to say
I could be a prince, but I think I'd rather not
In her mind, she's a queen, and no one's gonna stop her
She wished she had a problem in her fairy tale world
but on the backside of a bill, she's my fairy tale girl
I feel that Autumn's coming early this year
and I know that my change of colors is near
So I'm glad that Autumn's coming early this year
Mmmm...
You wish you had someone fall
for all the things you do
but I guess you must have missed me
tripping over you
not a bridge that I can't cross, there's not a cross that I can't bear
so when I turn my head, she begins to stare
the candle that burns brightly is never gonna last
but I guess I refused to learn that all the nice guys finish last
Now she feels that Autumn's coming early this year
And she bares all the things that I wouldn't bear
Now she's glad that Autumn's coming early this year
Mmmm...
Better late than never than to never have loved at all
All it takes is just one kiss to turn summer into fall
Not in a land of make believe, no, it's not mystery
That she's the moon and I'm the sun, and at the dusk we meet
Chose to be a common man, but all it took was just one look
Still there's nothing meaningful,
so I'll just bring back the hook...
I know that Autumn's coming early this year
and I know that my change of colors is near
I know that Autumn's coming early this year
I traded apathy for someone who cares
So I'm glad that Autumn's coming early this year
Yes, Autumn's coming early this year.

I like this one. but now that you told me that its about a girl named Autumn... I'm not quite sure how to interpret what you say. There can be a few different meanings....
general question: when you write songs are you trying to get a message across for the reader/listener or do you purposely want to leave readers/listeners to use their own interpretation?
I really like your words in this one though... but also trying to figure out your style. i guess that's the analytical part of me ;)
Well, the double entendre was more just fun for me... i always thought it funny that it came to mind when i wrote this chorus, and nobody else that sang along knew.
even with the hidden meanings, it makes for a pretty sweet chorus in the song. hope to get this one up some time soon, even if its the eight year old, sloppy 4-track recording.
back when i first wrote songs, i don't know that i wrote them for anyone else, so i don't think i was trying very hard to get a message across. Even with that said, I've tried over the years to not make my message entirely clear. I like songs better that are open to interpretation. I think that songs that I've written in the past five years may show this more than the songs I wrote in the first five years, but even back then I didn't want everything to be obvious.
As for my style... good luck. It changes from song to song. How I'm feeling when I write, what songs/bands I'm into when I write it... even the source of inspiration may cause a complete shift of what I write.
For example... soldier... it was written off of the guitar part, a driving, percussive acoustic thing. Last waltz, which I'll put up shortly, is in a waltz style... I was listening to a lot of Elliott Smith at the time. Autumn... a lot of cliched lyrics put together to make something fun and upbeat. Everything, nothing doesn't even have a chorus. It's more of a vague story than a pop song.
I'm glad you like them, tho... I know there are about ten people out there reading right now. I'm glad a couple of you comment!
Well....My name is Autumn and I liked it. Its so hard to find a song with my name in it....so thank you, you rock!
Hey, Autumn... if you ever come back to check your song out again, you should look for music post I put up on January 30. Glad you liked it. :)
